Dissecting the Best Selling NHL Jerseys…

Ryan Callahan New York Rangers JerseyVia the NHL by way of Deadspin, the season’s best-selling jerseys were ranked (I typed the rankings at the end of this entry), and not all that surprisingly, Sidney Crosby came out on top.  No matter how sleazy his game is (which is a matter of opinion), he’s still the most dynamic player in hockey.  I mean, sure, he’s fun to hate, but there isn’t a single fan out there of ANY team that would be upset if he was signed to that team.  Well, all except for Dave Hyde, who’d complain that he’d be too old. (One of these I’m going to dedicate 1000 words to just how ignorant an article that is.)  Seriously, gun to your head?  You know you’d be glad he’s on your team.  To me, this was a no brainer.

To be honest, I didn’t really see all that many surprises.  The most interesting on the list is Ryan Callahan.  Is he an elite player?  No doubt.  Am I surprised he’s on this list?  Not at all.  Will he be on this list next year? No chance if he stays in Tampa. Look at Steven Stamkos!  He’s number 15 on the list, and he’s arguably a top 3 player in the game.  Callahan’s ranking has more to do with playing in New York.  A. He was the most skilled player on the team. (Don’t get me started on Her Majesty.)  B.  It’s the Rangers.  I’d argue that if he played ANYWHERE else, he probably wouldn’t be top 15.  That’s not meant to be an insult against his skill.  I just don’t think his name carries the kind of cachè that a Giroux or Kane or even Chara does.  (As long as we’re on the subject, I think it should be mandatory that Chara’s jersey ONLY be sold in Chara’s actual size.  He’d go for that, right?  I mean, how great would it be when you have an entire arena wearing size 14XL jerseys in your honor?)

Also interesting is that the ONLY Canadian team player on the list is Phil Kessel all the way down at 17.  I’d expect Carey Price to make the list.  I mean, really, ANY big time player in Canada you’d think would be top 20.  It’s not like Dallas has more hockey fans than Winnipeg! Where’s Andrew Ladd? (Dallas may have a larger metro area, but come on.  It’s Canada’s national past time!)

Is there any body you thought would make the list and didn’t?  Let me know.  (To me, this is pure comedy.  I think I have negative 2 readers.  Like, not only do they NOT read the blog, but they actively AVOID reading the blog.)
